Taiwan residents began voting to elect the island’s administration chief and members of the Legislative Council (the highest legislative body).

The Election Commission said that polling stations opened their doors at 08:00 local time, and this year 19.5 million of Taiwan’s 23.4 million people, meaning everyone over the age of twenty, will be able to participate in voting.

Each voter will receive three ballot papers: choosing the head of the administration and his deputy, voting for candidates for the position of parliamentary representatives in the regional district, and voting on party lists. The results are expected to be announced in the evening, and the winner will be determined by a simple majority of votes. There is no second round in these elections. .

Voting will last eight hours, and polling stations will close at 16:00 local time. According to current legislation, it is prohibited to conduct opinion polls 10 days before the elections, as well as to conduct opinion polls after leaving the voting centers.

Three candidates are competing for the position of head of the administration: 64-year-old Lai Ching-ti from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, 66-year-old Hu Yu from the opposition Kuomintang Party, and 64-year-old Ki Wen-ze from the centrist Taiwan People’s Party. Lai Ching-ti is the most likely candidate in the electoral race. Taiwan has been under its own administration since 1949, but the Beijing authorities consider the island a Chinese province.
