2026 Rocket Classic Features Renovated Detroit Golf Club and Loaded Field

The 2026 Rocket Classic brings a loaded 145-player field featuring ten major champions to a newly renovated Detroit Golf Club starting Thursday, July 30. The tournament marks the final event under Rocket Mortgage sponsorship after an eight-year run, introducing a restructured 7,328-yard layout designed by Tyler Rae.

Course Renovations and Strategic Changes at Detroit Golf Club

Returning participants walking the grounds will encounter rearranged furniture following an extensive project on the North Course. Architect Tyler Rae undertook the renovations immediately after last year’s tournament concluded, focusing primarily on drainage issues across the even terrain. Beyond utility, the overhaul altered sightlines and introduced fresh strategic demands.

Rae increased and lifted greens, added dimension to bunkers, and replaced the sole pond fronting the par-5 14th hole with fescue. Wispy grass now extends throughout the property as part of an effort to toughen up a venue that has historically played as a pushover for PGA Tour members. Overall par drops to a stock 70, featuring just two par 5s at holes Nos. 4 and 14. Holes Nos. 7 and 17 converted from par 5s into long par 4s stretching past 500 yards. The course measures an overall distance of 7,328 yards—a modest 42-yard decrease from its previous setup—while bentgrass greens will roll to approximately 12 1/2 feet on the Stimpmeter.

A Loaded Field and Notable Absences in Detroit

The eighth edition of the tournament features 10 major championship winners and 21 players ranked inside the top 50 of the Official World Golf Rankings. Marquee names committed to the field include Cameron Young, Russell Henley, Chris Gotterup, Wyndham Clark, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Si Woo Kim, Ben Griffin, Ryan Gerard, Hideki Matsuyama, Akshay Bhatia, Patrick Cantlay, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, and defending champion Aldrich Potgieter.

One notable name missing from the final entry list is Phil Mickelson. Mickelson has not played a PGA Tour event since joining LIV Golf in 2022, and his absence continues a strained relationship with the tournament dating back to his lone appearance in 2021. Having played just one professional event all year—a tie for 48th at a LIV Golf tournament in South Africa in March—Mickelson missed all four majors for the first time in his professional career.

Top Contenders and Data-Driven Insights

With the FedExCup Playoffs looming just two weeks away, the timing of the course redesign acts as a sudden test for players adjusting their standings. Analysts highlighting top players to watch point to competitors like Ryan Gerard, who ranks 24th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Gerard enters the week having gained 6.86 strokes off the tee across eight rounds in the British Isles, beating the field average in driving accuracy by seven and 19 percentage points.

Jake Knapp also arrives with momentum after finishing tied for 13th at the 3M Open, where a Sunday 62 featured nine birdies over his final 12 holes. Knapp gained 10.7 shots on the field with his driving and iron play in Minnesota, offering signs of recovery after an early-season left thumb injury.

The Final Chapter for Rocket Companies

This week marks the conclusion of an era in Detroit sports. Rocket Companies declined its option for 2027, bringing a definitive end to its 13-year association with the tournament and its eight-year run as title sponsor inside city limits. The event originally debuted in 2019 as the first PGA Tour stop played entirely inside Detroit city limits, filling a calendar gap left by the departure of the Buick Open in 2009. Past winners include Nate Lashley in 2019, Bryson DeChambeau in 2020, and Rickie Fowler in 2023.
