3 Nominated MPs say Pritam Singh is unsuited to continue as Leader of the Opposition

Members of Parliament voiced strong opinions regarding accountability and trust following recent court findings, emphasizing the importance of integrity for all members, including the Leader of the Opposition. Several speakers affirmed that honesty before parliament is “non-negotiable” and crucial for maintaining Singapore’s standing as a hub for investment and innovation.

Trust as an Economic Asset

One Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) stated that when trust fails, political risks rise, impacting investor confidence and economic growth. He reinforced the idea that trust is not merely an ideal, but a “foundational economic asset” for Singapore.

The NMP felt compelled to speak due to the “centrality of trust,” adding that if an NMP were to lie to parliament and be convicted in a court of law, they should step down from their position, not as punishment, but as a matter of integrity.

He argued it would be difficult to apply lower expectations to the Leader of the Opposition.

Reliance on Court Findings

Another NMP, an engineer, stated he relied on the factual findings presented by the court. He explained that in his professional work, reliance is placed on court findings as they represent “factual stuff and not disputable.”

He questioned the appropriate action, noting that members are addressed as “honourable members” and the public expects high integrity and honesty, particularly from office holders. He stated it is “just not really tenable” for the Leader of the Opposition to continue in their role.
