Four people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at a condominium near Punggol Park on April 4.
Electrical Fire at Rivervale Condominium
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to a fire at 3 Rivervale Link at approximately 2:10 p.m. The Rivervale condominium is located at that address.
Upon arrival, SCDF personnel observed black smoke emanating from a unit on the third floor. Firefighters extinguished the blaze, which originated in a bedroom, using a water jet.
Four residents had already evacuated the affected unit when SCDF arrived, and about 50 people were evacuated from the building. Four individuals were assessed for smoke inhalation and transported to Singapore General Hospital. Three were residents of the affected unit, and one was from a neighboring unit.
Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by an electrical fault within the bedroom.
SCDF reminded the public to take precautions to prevent similar incidents, including:
-
Not overloading electrical outlets with appliances.
-
Switching off appliances when not in use.
-
Regularly checking electrical wires and replacing or repairing any frayed or cracked cords.
-
Avoiding running wires under carpets or mats and keeping them away from hot surfaces.
-
Using only appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark. Information on controlled appliances can be found at www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg.
-
Not leaving batteries or devices to charge unattended for extended periods, or overnight.
