400 Entrepreneurs Gather for 2026 Bicol MSME Conference

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — Approximately 400 entrepreneurs, government officials, and business leaders convened in Legazpi City on Wednesday for the opening of the 2026 Bicol Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Conference. Held at the Marison Convention Center, the two-day event focuses on equipping local businesses with the strategies necessary to navigate evolving market challenges.

Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region V, the conference runs through Thursday under the theme, “Navigating the Shift: Building Resilient and Future-Ready MSMEs.” DTI-Bicol Regional Director Dindo Nabol emphasized that the gathering serves as a platform to foster long-term economic stability in the region.

“The MSME conference is more than an event—it is a movement to empower our entrepreneurs, strengthen their resilience, and guide them toward sustainable practices that secure long-term prosperity for the Bicol Region,” Nabol said.

Focus on Resilience and Digital Transformation

The conference program is designed to address the practical needs of small business owners through a variety of formats, including plenary sessions, panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities. Key areas of focus for the participants include:

* Business Continuity: Strategies for maintaining operations during economic fluctuations.
* Digital Transformation: Adopting modern tools to expand market reach and efficiency.
* Sustainability and Innovation: Integrating eco-friendly practices and new ideas into traditional business models.

This thematic focus aligns with broader national efforts to modernize the Philippine economy. Across the country, the DTI has prioritized a five-point agenda that emphasizes digitalization, diversification, financing access, franchising, and mentoring to improve enterprise competitiveness.

Integrated Support Through One-Stop Services

A significant feature of the conference is the establishment of a “One-Stop Service Lane.” This initiative connects entrepreneurs directly with government agencies and private sector partners to facilitate immediate business support. Participating organizations include:

* Food and Drug Administration
* Small Business Corp.
* Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines
* Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas
* Government Service Insurance System
* Land Bank of the Philippines
* PhilExport

In addition to these services, the event showcases the “Shared Service Facility,” which highlights locally produced goods, and the “Greening Lane Expo,” which focuses on sustainable products and digital solutions developed by homegrown brands.

Recognizing Excellence and Compliance

The DTI intends to use the conference to celebrate achievements within the local business community. The agency will recognize outstanding entrepreneurs who have made significant contributions to Bicol’s economic development. Furthermore, the DTI will confer the Bagwis Seal of Excellence upon retail establishments that have proven their compliance with fair trade laws and national consumer protection standards.

National Context: The Importance of Formalization

The focus on MSME development is part of a wider national movement. According to the DTI, formalizing business operations—such as official registration—is a critical step for startups and micro-entrepreneurs. While some business owners delay registration under the assumption that their enterprises are too small, officials note that formal status is a prerequisite for accessing government financing programs, development services, and mentoring.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority highlights the significance of this sector, noting that MSMEs account for 99.6% of all business establishments in the country and generate 67% of total employment. By encouraging registration and digital adoption, the DTI aims to ensure these enterprises can participate more effectively in both domestic and regional markets, ultimately strengthening the country’s economic foundation.
