New Browser Extension Flags AI-Generated Content on Steam
Gamers now have a powerful new tool to identify potential AI-generated content on the Steam platform. A recently released browser extension, AI Warning for Steam, instantly alerts users to games that have disclosed the use of artificial intelligence in their development. This comes as the debate surrounding AI’s role in game creation intensifies, with concerns rising about the potential impact on artistic integrity and developer transparency.
The increasing prevalence of AI in game development is undeniable. From code generation to asset creation, studios – both large and independent – are exploring ways to leverage AI to streamline workflows and reduce costs. While AI can be a valuable tool, particularly for prototyping or filling gaps in development, the ethical implications of using AI to replicate existing artistic styles or replace human artists are significant. The question isn’t necessarily *if* AI will be used, but *how* it will be used responsibly.
Valve’s AI Disclosure Policy and Its Limitations
Last year, Valve implemented a policy requiring developers to disclose the use of AI-generated assets within their Steam game listings. This disclosure appears in a dedicated “AI Generated Content Disclosure” section. However, relying solely on developers to self-report AI usage presents a clear challenge. Not all developers may be forthcoming, leading to a potential lack of transparency for consumers. Finding this disclosure also requires scrolling through often lengthy game descriptions, making it inconvenient for users to quickly assess a game’s AI footprint.
The AI Warning for Steam extension bypasses this inconvenience. Available for both Firefox and Chrome, the extension displays a clear warning if a game has disclosed AI-generated content. This warning appears as a pop-up notification directly on the game’s Steam page, providing immediate visibility.
For more technically inclined users, a userscript version is also available, installable via script managers like ViolentMonkey. This script integrates seamlessly with SteamDB, a popular resource for Steam game information. SteamDB itself maintains a dedicated page listing games with AI content disclosures, drawing data from the same Steam API used by the extension and script.
Interestingly, some games, like The Alters, previously discussed in relation to AI implementation, do not currently display the AI disclosure section. This could indicate a revision of AI usage within the game or a delay in updating the disclosure information.

The extension’s warning is persistent, reappearing each time a user revisits a game page. It operates without a graphical user interface, offering a streamlined and unobtrusive experience.
Several popular titles, including My Summer Car and Siralim Ultimate, have disclosed the use of AI-generated content. Perhaps more concerning, even games on users’ wishlists may contain AI-generated elements, as evidenced by the discovery in one user’s list: Sumerian Six.
The AI Warning for Steam script is an open-source project, created by seeeeew, and its source code is publicly available on GitHub.
The rise of AI in gaming raises fundamental questions about the future of creativity and the value of human artistry. Do you believe developers have a moral obligation to fully disclose all instances of AI-generated content? And how much AI integration is too much – at what point does it detract from the overall gaming experience?
