Multiple people were killed and others injured in a fire at a bar in the Swiss Alps during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The fire broke out at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana early today.
Fire at Le Constellation Bar in Crans-Montana
The fire occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. local time (11:30 a.m. AEDT) at Le Constellation bar, located in the Alpine ski resort municipality of Crans-Montana. Police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion stated that “more than a hundred people were in the building, and we are seeing many injured and many dead.”
A reception centre and helpline have been established to support impacted families, according to Lathion. Authorities are in the early stages of their investigation.
Crans-Montana is an internationally renowned ski resort that attracts a large number of tourists. Lathion noted the resort’s popularity, stating, “We’re just at the beginning of our investigation, but this is an internationally renowned ski resort with lots of tourists.”
Police are scheduled to hold a news conference at 10 a.m. in Crans-Montana (8 p.m. AEDT). The community is situated approximately 40 kilometres north of the Matterhorn.
The ski resort, located about two hours east of Geneva, welcomes approximately 3 million tourists annually, primarily from Switzerland, Italy, and France.
