The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted allegations circulating on social media concerning its handling of the case of Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student who died in Latvia. The allegations, made by a woman claiming to be the deceased’s sister, included claims of financial requests, exclusion of family members from travel arrangements, and the issuance of a fake airline ticket.
Ministry Rejects Allegations as False
In a statement issued on February 2, 2026, the Ministry described the claims as “false, misleading, and unfounded.” The Ministry specifically addressed allegations that Nana Agyei’s mother was asked to pay money to facilitate her travel, that government officials traveled to Latvia without any family member present, and that a fake airline ticket was provided to the bereaved mother.
The Ministry stated it has been transparent with the family and has facilitated travel arrangements for two family members and a pathologist to travel to Latvia. Initial travel plans, scheduled for January 31, 2026, were delayed due to visa processing issues.
“The Ministry states emphatically that it has remained in constant and transparent engagement with the family of the deceased to facilitate the travel of two duly nominated family members and a pathologist to Latvia,” the statement read. “At no time has the Ministry, or any government official acting on its behalf, demanded or received any form of payment from the family. For the avoidance of doubt, the Government of Ghana is fully bearing the cost of all travel arrangements.”
Visa Delays and Documentation Issues
The Ministry explained that the nominated family members were unable to travel on January 31st due to delays in visa issuance. It further clarified that the family members did not present all the required documentation during their visa appointments.
The deceased’s mother was informed when the trip could not proceed as planned. Upon receiving the outstanding documents, the Ministry promptly submitted them to the embassy and formally notified the mother on Friday evening and again on Saturday that travel could not occur as scheduled due to the unresolved visa situation.
Clarification on Airline Ticket
Regarding the alleged fake airline ticket, the Ministry clarified that the document was an itinerary generated solely to support the visa application process and was not a confirmed ticket. The Ministry’s official in contact with the mother expressly informed her of this.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to securing the necessary visas and pursuing justice for the deceased, while also cautioning against the spread of misinformation.
