Residents in Sengkang and Ang Mo Kio have questioned the recent installation of metal grilles at the base of walls in several HDB multi-storey carparks, raising concerns about the necessity and cost of the project.
New Grilles Installed in HDB Carparks
A Sengkang resident first brought the issue to public attention on Thursday, posting photos to the Complaint Singapore Facebook group showing the newly installed metal grilles covering narrow gaps along the carpark walls. The resident, who has lived in the area for 27 years, questioned the purpose of the grilles, noting that the gaps have existed for decades without incident.
According to the resident, contractors on-site were unable to provide a clear explanation for the installation, stating they were simply following instructions from the Housing & Development Board (HDB). She expressed concern that the project represents a waste of taxpayer money.
Similar grilles have been observed in an Ang Mo Kio carpark, as highlighted in a separate post on the Umbrage Singapore Facebook group. Photos show a comparable installation, with metal grilles covering the lower gaps of the carpark walls.
The posts have sparked debate online, with some netizens suggesting the grilles were installed for safety reasons, such as preventing objects from falling through the gaps. Others echoed the original poster’s concerns, questioning whether public funds could have been better allocated.
MS News has reached out to the Ang Mo Kio and Sengkang Town Councils for further information.
