These shifts aren’t theoretical. The United States is currently experiencing an unprecedented measles outbreak, widely attributed to declining vaccination rates fueled by vaccine skepticism. This outbreak serves as a stark warning of the real-world consequences of undermining public health initiatives.

A Crisis of Confidence: New Data Reveals Public Distrust

A recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) paints a troubling picture of public trust in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). According to KFF President and CEO Drew Altman, trust in the CDC has fallen from 85% in 2020 to less than 50% today. The decline is particularly pronounced among Republicans, whose trust has never recovered from the politicization of the pandemic. Specifically, only 44% of Americans express confidence in federal agencies like the CDC and FDA regarding childhood vaccine recommendations. Interestingly, even those who identify with the MAHA movement demonstrate a degree of skepticism towards the current leadership’s actions.

The new immunization schedule has significantly impacted trust in the CDC and FDA among Democrats and Independents, while Republicans, who already harbored low levels of trust, remain largely unaffected. Confidence in established vaccines like polio and MMR remains relatively high across the political spectrum, but diverges sharply when it comes to the flu and, particularly, the COVID-19 vaccine – with 79% of Democrats expressing confidence compared to just 28% of Republicans and 45% of Independents.

This erosion of trust isn’t isolated to public health agencies. A December 2025 Pew Research Center survey revealed that overall trust in the federal government is at an all-time low, with only 17% of Americans expressing confidence in Washington. This decline has been decades in the making, and is further exacerbated by partisan divides.

Furthermore, Gallup’s annual ethics ratings show a decline in public trust across all professions. While nurses (75%), doctors (57%), and pharmacists (53%) still rank highly, even their ratings are trending downward. Members of Congress and car salespeople tie for near the bottom (7%), just above telemarketers (5%). Gallup’s data underscores a broader societal trend of declining faith in institutions.

We are living in an era of misinformation, where facts are often overshadowed by personal beliefs and opinions. This environment benefits those in power and those with financial interests, but ultimately harms the public. The dismantling of expertise and the prioritization of ideology over science are damaging the credibility of vital institutions and jeopardizing public health.
