Orbán: Brussels is the Real Threat, Not Putin | News

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that the 21st century will be a “century of humiliation” for Europe, arguing the continent is not participating in the world’s current transformation. He believes Hungary, however, has the potential to navigate this period successfully.

Orbán Claims Brussels Agents Not Fully Removed

Orbán referenced a speech from the previous year, where he predicted his government, allied with Donald Trump, would be on the “main street of history,” while opponents would be relegated to “muddy side streets.” He stated that prediction has come to fruition, citing what he described as a revolution against liberal elites led by the U.S. president.

He argued that Hungary joined this movement, leading to efforts to remove NGOs, opposition newspapers, and judges labeled as “bugged” and classified as foreign agents. Orbán acknowledged that this effort is “only half the job,” as the “Brussels repressive machine is still at work in Hungary” and will need to be addressed after upcoming elections.

He characterized Brussels as consisting of “disguised civil organisations, bought journalists, judges, politicians, algorithms, bureaucrats, rolling Euro-millions.” Orbán did not mention his previous promises of economic recovery and significant growth, which resulted in only 0.3% growth in 2025, nor did he address the large turnout for a ‘Pride Day’ celebration despite an attempted ban.

Orbán highlighted new and promised welfare measures, funded by special taxes on large businesses.

“Putining” and Concerns Over European Commission Censorship

Orbán introduced the term “Putining” to describe the Western practice of portraying Russia and Vladimir Putin as a threat, calling it “primitive and frivolous.” He asserted that Brussels poses a “tangible reality and a direct threat.”

He cited a U.S. report alleging the European Commission pressured social media providers to “censor” content during European Parliament elections in Romania and Moldova, and expressed appreciation for the United States for exposing this alleged censorship.

Orbán Alleges Foreign Influence on Hungarian Rivals

Orbán claimed that Hungarian political rivals are influenced not only by Brussels but also by global businesses. He referenced the former employment of István Kapitány, a candidate for economic leader from the Tisza Party, at Shell, alleging the company profited from the war in Ukraine and aims to cut Hungary off from Russian oil.

He noted that Donald Trump’s administration had previously introduced sanctions, granting Hungary a one-year reprieve. Orbán also stated that the Hungarian national oil company MOL has benefited from the war by purchasing cheap Russian oil, currently exempt from European and U.S. sanctions.

He also mentioned ERSTE Bank, where another Tisza economist, András Kármán, previously worked, alleging the bank seeks to remove special banking taxes through a potential Tisza government.

Orbán Predicts War in Europe by 2030

“Europe has decided to go to war by 2030. This will be the last election before war,” Orbán stated, claiming Brussels intends to defeat Russia in Ukraine and is preparing for war across Europe. He said Europe is arming itself and providing instructions for wartime scenarios while sending financial aid to Ukraine.

Orbán criticized Ukraine as “just swallowing money” and questioned the feasibility of defeating a nuclear power without using nuclear weapons. He affirmed that Hungary will not send money or weapons to Ukraine, nor will it allow Hungarian citizens to be sent to fight there, despite NATO’s charter not requiring military force in conflicts.
