Lisbon, Portugal, will receive €1.5 million in aid from institutions led by His Highness the Aga Khan to support reconstruction and revitalization efforts following recent devastating storms. The financial contribution will focus on supporting students and families, strengthening educational structures, and building climate resilience through ecosystem stabilization.
Storm Damage in Portugal
Over the past few weeks, Portugal has been impacted by a series of intense winter storms. Storm Kristin brought record winds and flooding in late January, followed by Storm Leonardo, which caused deadly floods and mass evacuations. Most recently, Storm Marta delivered further torrential downpours and disruption.
The storms have resulted in multiple fatalities, widespread flooding, the evacuation of thousands of people, and significant infrastructure damage, including a partial collapse of the main Lisbon–Porto motorway. A state of calamity has been declared in numerous municipalities.
Aid Implementation
The aid program, approved by the Ismaili Imamat, will be implemented by the Aga Khan Foundation Portugal. The foundation will work closely with the Portuguese government and national and local authorities to distribute the funds and oversee the reconstruction efforts.
A key focus of the investment will be the creation of microforests and green spaces to stabilize ecosystems and strengthen long-term climate resilience in the affected areas.
