No proven link between Duterte speeches and drug deaths, defence tells ICC – France 24

Defense lawyers argued before the International Criminal Court (ICC) that there is no proven link between former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s speeches and the deaths that occurred during his administration’s drug war. The prosecution, however, alleges a “systematic” pattern of killings under Duterte’s leadership.

Duterte’s Role in Drug Crackdowns

The ICC is investigating alleged crimes against humanity committed during Duterte’s “war on drugs,” which resulted in the deaths of thousands of individuals. The prosecution contends that Duterte was at the “very heart” of the murderous drug crackdowns in the Philippines.

Kaufman, a lawyer representing Duterte, maintained that there is no direct link between Duterte and the deaths, according to reports. The prosecution alleges a “systematic” pattern of killings, presenting evidence to support their claims.

The ICC explained that redactions made during a live broadcast were due to the disclosure of confidential information.

The defense is challenging the ICC’s jurisdiction and the admissibility of the case.
