Trump on Iran: Talks Loom After ‘Unhappy’ Remarks

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he was “not happy” with Iran and wants to reach a deal with Tehran, but warned that military force is sometimes necessary. The comments came after negotiations between U.S. and Iranian officials in Geneva ended without an agreement, and as a significant U.S. military presence remains in the region.

Trump Seeks Deal, Doesn’t Rule Out Force

Trump stated that Iran is still unwilling to commit to forswearing nuclear weapons, a key demand from the United States. He spoke to reporters as he departed the White House for a trip to Texas.

“I’d love not to use [military force], but sometimes you have to,” Trump said. He added that he is “not thrilled” with the ongoing negotiations and “not happy with the fact that they’re not willing to give us what we have to have.”

U.S.-Iran talks end with no deal as military action looms

A third round of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in Geneva have ended without a deal, leaving the risk of military action looming. Trump says he prefers an agreement with Tehran over war, but details of the president’s demands remain unclear.

Further discussions on Iran were scheduled to take place later Friday. Trump reiterated his demand that Iran renounce the pursuit of nuclear weapons, stating, “We want no nuclear weapons by Iran and they’re not saying those golden words.”

Oman’s foreign minister travelled to Washington Friday to discuss the issue with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Rubio to Visit Israel

Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to visit Israel early next week to discuss “a range of regional priorities, including Iran, Lebanon and ongoing efforts to implement President Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza.”

The U.S. Embassy in Israel earlier urged staff who wish to depart to do so, mirroring similar advisories from other nations and signalling the possibility of imminent U.S. military action. The announcement of Rubio’s visit may suggest a longer timeframe for any potential military strike.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has consistently called for stronger U.S. action against Iran and has warned Israel will respond to any Iranian attack.

Trump renews vow to deny Iran nuclear weapons during state of the union

U.S. President Donald Trump laid out his case for a possible attack on Iran in his state of the union speech on Tuesday, saying he would not allow ‘the world’s number one sponsor of terror’ to have a nuclear weapon.

U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee authorized the departure of embassy employees who wish to leave Israel, advising them to secure flights to Washington. The authorization was announced in an email before 10:30 a.m. local time.

Airlines, including KLM, have suspended flights to Tel Aviv, and other embassies are also planning authorized departures.

International Response

Australia has directed the departure of dependents of Australian officials stationed in Israel. India and several European countries have advised their citizens to avoid travel to Iran.

Britain’s Foreign Office has temporarily relocated some diplomatic staff and their families from Tel Aviv as a precaution, though the British Embassy remains operational. The Foreign Office warned that the security situation “could escalate quickly.”

China’s embassy in Israel has asked its citizens to remain in the country, urging them to enhance their security and emergency preparedness.

Global Affairs Canada stated that Canadian staff and their dependents in Israel and Palestine remain in place. The department reiterated its advice for Canadians in Iran: “Leave Iran now if you can do so safely,” citing the deadly government crackdown on protests in January. Canadian staff are also remaining in Lebanon despite rising tensions.
