Paul Heyman on the Evolution of Wrestling, Media, and Mastering the Modern Platform
WWE Executive and creative force Paul Heyman recently shared his insights on the past, present, and future of sports entertainment during an interview with Arash Markazi of The Sporting Tribune. The conversation spanned from the groundbreaking ECW invasion angle of the early 2000s to the evolving landscape of sports media and his prominent role in the new WWE 2K26 video game.
Heyman recounted the initial discussions with then-WWE Chairman Vince McMahon that led to the dramatic ECW invasion of Monday Night Raw. He emphasized that the arrangement wasn’t a traditional partnership, but rather a strategic alliance born out of a shared objective. “I would never call it a partnership,” Heyman stated. “It was sort of a collaboration. Isn’t that the word today? Collaboration. There are no real partnerships anymore. It was just something where we were plotting against Eric Bischoff and WCW.” This period marked a pivotal moment in wrestling history, injecting a dose of unpredictability and realism into the mainstream product.
WWE 2K26 and a Legacy of Digital Engagement
The interview coincided with Heyman’s promotional work for WWE 2K26, the latest installment in the popular wrestling video game franchise. He highlighted the immersive “MyRISE” mode, which allows players to experience a dramatic comeback storyline guided by Heyman himself. His involvement with the 2K series extends back over 15 years, encompassing in-game performances, voiceovers, production, advertising, and public relations. For WWE 2K26 specifically, Heyman dedicated over three hours to voice recording and appears in the game’s launch commercial.
Beyond his WWE commitments, Heyman is a co-founder of L4L – Looking4Larry Agency, which recently merged with MCM Studios. This union has created New York City’s largest midtown production space, boasting cutting-edge LED walls and artificial intelligence technology. This venture underscores Heyman’s commitment to innovation and his ability to adapt to the changing demands of the entertainment industry.
Navigating the Future of Sports Media
The conversation shifted to the challenges and opportunities facing sports media in an era of unprecedented popularity and profitability. Heyman stressed the importance of maintaining journalistic integrity and credibility. “By taking it seriously as you do,” he remarked, acknowledging the interviewer’s dedication to quality reporting. “Too many people try to make themselves the story, and therefore they water down the newsworthiness of things that should be discussed among sports fans.” He believes that genuine credibility will always rise above superficiality and self-promotion.
Heyman articulated a vision for the future of sports media that prioritizes multi-platform delivery of compelling storytelling. He advocated for a shift away from traditional, delayed reporting towards immediate engagement through social media and podcasts. “It’s all in the platforms,” he explained. “It’s a microphone to the youth. In the same way that no one looks to traditional media anymore. How many people actually listen to terrestrial radio?”
He acknowledged the generational divide regarding social media, but emphasized the necessity of embracing these platforms, regardless of personal preferences. “However you or I feel about it is totally irrelevant,” Heyman asserted. “That’s the way it is. So I have to accept it. Would I do it that way? No. But that’s me, and I’m not the one driving the train.” He likened resisting this change to being a passenger instead of a conductor, a role he has consistently occupied throughout his four-decade career. “I have to get aboard it, whether I agree with it or not. I have to understand how to use it, how to present with that in mind and how to exploit the opportunity.”
What strategies do you think sports organizations should prioritize to connect with younger audiences? And how can journalists maintain their credibility in an increasingly fragmented media landscape?
