The process for a political appointee was followed regarding the appointment of Lord Mandelson as US ambassador, according to the independent adviser on ministerial standards, Sir Laurie. The review was prompted by concerns raised about Lord Mandelson’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Lord Mandelson Appointment Review
Conservative shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster Alex Burghart requested Sir Laurie investigate a “possible breach of the Ministerial Code” by the prime minister concerning the appointment.
Documents released this week revealed Sir Keir was warned that Lord Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein posed a “reputational risk” before his confirmation as ambassador. The documents also showed the relationship continued after Epstein’s 2008 conviction for procuring sex from a minor.
Sir Keir has acknowledged a “mistake” in appointing Lord Mandelson and has apologized to Epstein’s victims.
The Conservative party alleged a “cover-up” due to blank sections in the released documents reserved for the prime minister’s comments on the appointment. However, it is understood that no redactions were made and the sections were published as they were received from the prime minister’s office after review.
