A former director of Donald Trump’s National Counterterrorism Centre alleged the president was pressured into declaring war on Iran by Israel and its American lobby before resigning, claims the White House dismissed as “insulting and laughable.” Joe Kent, a special forces veteran, made the accusations in a resignation letter.
Kent’s Allegations
Kent alleged that Israel drew the U.S. into the 2003 Iraq War and had quietly fostered pro-war sentiment within the Trump administration to encourage conflict with Iran.
The White House responded by dismissing Kent’s claims. Taylor Budowich, a former White House deputy chief-of-staff, described Kent as a “crazed egomaniac” who attempted to subvert the chain of command and undermine the president, stating his resignation was an attempt to “make a splash.”
Trump’s Response and Allied Relations
Trump has also voiced frustration with allies who have declined to join a potential war against Iran. He has criticized the reluctance of leaders from Britain and France to send military support, questioning the value of NATO.
Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky offered assistance to the U.S. in defending against Iranian drones, but Trump rejected the offer, stating the U.S. has superior drone technology.
Trump has been critical of allies, including Australia, for not offering support, even while stating the U.S. didn’t need their help. Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator, reported that Trump was “never so angry” during a conversation about the issue.
The administration’s approach to allies has been a recurring theme, with some officials expressing frustration over defense spending and a perceived lack of reciprocal support. Trump has previously criticized allies for not contributing enough to collective security efforts.
