The recent inclusion of Star Fox’s Fox McCloud, voiced by Glen Powell, in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ignited fervent speculation among fans regarding a potential Super Smash Bros.-style crossover film. The appearance of characters from other beloved Nintendo franchises, such as Pikmin, only intensified this anticipation. However, those hopes have now been tempered by statements from the creative forces behind the animated success.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary creator of Mario, and Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, have indicated that a large-scale Super Smash Bros. cinematic universe is unlikely to materialize in the near future. Their comments, shared in a recent interview with Polygon, suggest a more measured approach to incorporating Nintendo’s vast roster of characters.
A Focused Approach to Nintendo’s Cinematic Universe
Miyamoto emphasized a preference for focusing on immediate projects, dismissing the idea of an “Avengers”-esque team-up event. Instead, any future appearances of Nintendo characters outside of their core franchises will likely be limited to supporting roles or brief cameos. “Right off the bat, I’ll say that unlike something like Super Smash Bros., I don’t think you’ll have a situation [where] all Nintendo characters would be joining [together in one film],” he stated.
Meledandri clarified that the inclusion of characters like Pikmin and Fox McCloud wasn’t a strategic move towards building an interconnected universe, but rather a result of creative brainstorming. “Our process is actually very different from that,” he explained. “It’s much more geared toward conversations about what would be fun within a certain scene in the movie. So these ideas come up based on, ‘Oh, wouldn’t it be fun if Pikmin appeared here? Wouldn’t that be fun?’ If we agree that it’s a fun idea, then we look to Miyamoto-san to just make his own judgment about whether or not it feels right to him.”
This approach suggests that cameos and supporting roles will continue to be the primary method of acknowledging and celebrating Nintendo’s diverse cast of characters. Miyamoto confirmed this, stating, “We have plenty of characters to create a movie, and yet we wanted to add a little bit of spice, a little bit of secret cameos here and there. And you’ll see that there’s one secret character that plays a big role. So I think there might be introductions of characters like this potentially in the future, something like that.”
The creative decisions also highlight the importance of organic integration. As Forbes reported, Glen Powell actively campaigned for the role of Fox McCloud, demonstrating a passion for the character that ultimately led to his inclusion. This suggests that character choices are driven by enthusiasm and a desire to honor the source material.
But what does this mean for the future of Nintendo adaptations? Will we see more surprising cameos in upcoming films? And could a smaller-scale crossover, focusing on a select group of characters, ever be a possibility? The current trajectory suggests a cautious, character-driven approach, prioritizing fun and fan service over grand, interconnected narratives.
