Downtown Raleigh parking prices could soon increase under a revised proposal that city leaders say reflects community feedback and scales back previous suggestions.
- Parking Decks: Hourly rates would rise from $2 to $3, with a daily maximum increasing from $14 to $21.
- On-Street Meters: Most spaces would increase from $1.25 to $1.50 per hour.
- Protected Programs: The first two hours of free parking in city-owned decks will remain in place.
Proposed Downtown Raleigh Parking Prices
At a Thursday morning town hall, officials detailed several adjustments to the city’s parking structure. Event parking near venues such as the Red Hat Amphitheater and the Raleigh Convention Center would increase to $4 per hour, with a daily maximum of $24.
Monthly parking rates are also proposed to rise from $125 to $135. City officials stated that the adjusted meter rates would create a consistent pricing structure across the downtown area.
Leaders noted that the current plan is a significant reduction from earlier concepts, some of which proposed raising rates as high as $2.50 per hour.
Maintenance and Economic Impact
The city intends to use the increased revenue to pay for facility maintenance, the replacement of aging parking meters, and overall improvements to downtown cleanliness and safety.
Several popular programs would be preserved, including free parking during nights and weekends and a free parking program designed for small businesses.
Bill King of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance highlighted the importance of the two-hour free parking program. A survey from last fall indicated the program generated a $3.8 million economic impact on downtown sales.
Implementation Status
The proposed changes are currently part of the city’s budget process, and a final decision has not yet been reached.
Pending City Council approval, city leaders are targeting Aug. 1 for the implementation of the new rates.
