DARC space radar should stop because of Trump – Welsh first minister

The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) is planning to refurbish an airfield at Cawdor Barracks to house the United Kingdom’s primary contribution to the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) programme.

Announced in 2023 as a joint effort between the UK, US, and Australia, the DARC programme is designed to detect and track objects orbiting Earth.

Impact on Cawdor Barracks

The proposed refurbishment would keep Cawdor Barracks operational beyond its original scheduled closure date of 2028.

However, the plan has faced opposition from local campaigners.

Political Opposition to the Partnership

In a Facebook reel, Morgan called for the project to be “halted,” stating that the United States under Donald Trump is no longer the partner it once was.

“Talk of targeting civilians, undermining our allies and diminishing the sacrifice of our armed forces is not the conduct of a reliable ally,” Morgan said.

Morgan further argued that there is a “clear difference” between maintaining partnerships and “giving a free pass to a US president who has threatened war crimes and shown contempt for our country.”

The UK should pause its participation in the Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) project until there is confidence that such partnerships reflect the country’s security interests and values, Morgan added.
