New Zealand defended the flight of a New Zealand military aircraft near China on Saturday after Beijing claimed the operation undermined its national security interests.
- China accused a New Zealand P-8A patrol aircraft of reconnaissance and harassment in the Yellow and East China Seas.
- The New Zealand Defence Force stated the flight was monitoring North Korean sanctions evasions under UN Security Council resolutions.
- Bilateral relations have been strained since Chinese naval exercises took place in the Tasman Sea last February.
Defense of New Zealand Military Aircraft Operations
China’s foreign ministry alleged on Friday that a New Zealand P-8A patrol aircraft conducted “continuous close-in reconnaissance and harassment” within the airspace and waters of the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea.
Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that these actions disrupted the order of civil aviation and increased the risks of “misunderstanding and miscalculation,” according to an official transcript.
Responding to these claims, the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) stated that a Royal New Zealand Air Force aircraft was undertaking activities to monitor North Korean sanctions evasions in North Asia.
The NZDF emphasized that this is a “longstanding deployment” conducted in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. The force further maintained that the crew operated professionally and followed international law and regional civil aviation procedures.
Strained Bilateral Relations
Tensions between the two nations rose in February of last year after Chinese navy vessels conducted live-fire exercises in the Tasman Sea close to New Zealand.
In June, the leaders of both nations met in New Zealand to discuss the role of trade in boosting ties between the two countries.
