Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts and strengthened supply and energy resilience during a phone call on April 20 amid the ongoing Middle East war.
- Leaders agreed on sustained diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis in Iran.
- Focus placed on accelerating regional cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid.
- Urgency driven by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the resulting global energy crisis.
The two leaders discussed the crisis in Iran, agreeing on the importance of sustained diplomatic efforts to secure a resolution. PM Wong stated on Facebook that it is critical for close neighbors like Singapore and Malaysia to stay coordinated and support one another during this period.
The diplomatic urgency follows a February 28 attack by the United States and Israel that targeted and killed top Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting retaliation across the Gulf region.
This conflict led to the military closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which typically carries one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas, triggering a global energy crisis.
Strengthening Singapore and Malaysia Energy Resilience
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim noted that both leaders welcome a temporary ceasefire and stressed the need for a lasting resolution. He highlighted Malaysia’s support for ongoing diplomatic efforts, including Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue.
Anwar further underscored the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz to maintain regional stability.
To mitigate global uncertainty, both countries will focus on strengthening grid resilience and managing supply-demand pressures. This includes accelerating regional cooperation through the ASEAN Power Grid.
Prime Minister Anwar stated that Malaysia will continue to prioritize domestic needs to ensure the country and the wider region remain resilient.
The April 20 conversation follows a previous call on March 25, during which the leaders committed to protecting regional stability amid pressures on the economy and oil supplies.
