Residents in low-lying areas of Wellington, New Zealand, have been urged to evacuate following record-breaking rainfall that triggered severe Wellington flash flooding across the capital city.

  • Record Rainfall: 77 millimetres of rain fell in less than one hour.
  • Emergency Volume: Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to 150 calls overnight.
  • Current Warning: Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to seek higher ground for 24 hours.

Mayor Andrew Little confirmed that the city experienced its heaviest rainfall on record. The deluge resulted in flash flooding, landslides, and road closures affecting the southern suburbs and the central business district.

Reports indicate that residents were forced to escape flooded homes during the night, with at least one home struck by a landslide. Several streets throughout the city were evacuated as a result of the weather.

Emergency Response to Wellington Flash Flooding

Fire and Emergency New Zealand officials stated they responded to 150 assistance calls overnight. Police have launched a search for a man whose property was flooded in the suburb of Karori.

An assistance center has been established for the region, which has a population of approximately 521,000, to support those required to evacuate their homes.

While the weather cleared briefly on Monday morning, heavy rain has returned to the city. The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office has advised residents in flood-prone locations to remain on higher ground for at least the next 24 hours.

This event follows a series of severe weather patterns across New Zealand. The region suffered flood damage last Friday, and the northern part of the North Island was impacted by Cyclone Vaianu one week ago.
