How MEC survived car crash!

Free State MEC for Economic Development, Small Businesses and Tourism Ketso Makume survived a severe car crash on the N5 highway on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

The incident occurred between Paul Roux and Senekal. Makume was traveling from Eden Farm in Bethlehem, where he had been attending an ANC regional conference for the Thabo Mofutsanyana region as part of his official and political commitments.

Cause of the Ketso Makume Car Crash

Department spokesperson Majalefa Mphapang stated that the crash happened when a wild animal suddenly ran across the road, leaving the driver with no time to avoid the collision.

Mphapang confirmed that while the vehicle was severely damaged, the impact did not result in critical casualties.

Condition of Passengers

“We are relieved to report that the MEC and both his protectors escaped without sustaining any serious injuries,” Mphapang said.

The department has requested that the MEC, his protectors, and their families be granted the necessary space and privacy to recover before resuming their official duties.

Community Reaction

The accident has recalled memories of a previous tragedy involving former MEC for Education Tate Makgoe, who died in a car crash on the N1 highway outside Winburg several years ago.

The similarity between the two events has deepened the sense of grief and concern within the community regarding the fragility of life for public figures.
