President Donald Trump was escorted off stage by the Secret Service Saturday after reports of shots fired during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC.
Vice President JD Vance and members of the Cabinet were also rushed from the venue. Officials have confirmed that Trump, Vance, and Cabinet members are safe.
Security Response to White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting
During the event, Secret Service agents shouted “shots fired.” Witness Wolf Blitzer reported being a few feet away from a gunman carrying a “very, very serious weapon” as the individual began shooting.
The Secret Service stated that one person is in custody. Trump later shared on Truth Social that a “shooter has been apprehended,” praising law enforcement for acting “quickly and bravely.”
Although Trump initially expressed intent to return to the dinner, he later announced he is returning to the White House at the request of law enforcement officials. The president stated he will hold a press conference momentarily.
