In Brisbane’s Supreme Court, Justice Rebecca Treston sentenced Golem to nine years’ imprisonment following his guilty plea to manslaughter and interfering with a corpse, as reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Deception and Isolation at the Benowa Home

Tomislav Nemes, a businessman who had become bed-bound following a fall in 2021, died around February 24, 2022. According to testimony, Golem actively isolated Nemes from his extended family by confiscating his phone and spreading misinformation about his medical condition. Nemes’ wife, Dragica, who spoke English as a second language, was misled by her son into believing her husband was recovering with herbal medicine.

“You seriously misled your mother… You knew that he was dead. As a result, your mother continued to sleep beside her husband’s dead body for some time until the smell of his decomposing body became too strong.”

Family Impact and the Welfare Check

The discovery of the body occurred only after Nemes’ daughter, Suzanna Belijanski, traveled from Canberra to the Gold Coast in April 2023 to demand a welfare check. Belijanski testified that she had been repeatedly lied to by Golem, who told her at various times that her father was at the PA Hospital under an alias to protect him from unnamed threats.

Belijanski described the agony of learning the truth after police finally gained entry to the home, where they found the remains in a mummified state. She expressed her trauma over the incident, stating that she could not unsee police footage showing Golem and his mother calmly preparing food in the kitchen while her father’s remains were in the next room.

Ongoing Uncertainty Regarding the Second Wife

While the court proceedings have concluded for Golem, the role of Dragica Nemes remains a point of note. Legal authorities have confirmed she has not been charged, despite living in the home throughout the 14-month period the body remained in the bedroom. With Golem set for potential release next month, the family’s search for answers regarding the full extent of the circumstances surrounding their father’s final months continues to be a central, if unresolved, aspect of the case.
