BCCI Dismisses Retirement Speculation
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially quashed rumors regarding the international retirement of Rohit Sharma. Speculation had intensified leading up to the third One-Day International (ODI) between India and England at Lord’s, with some media reports suggesting the match could be the final appearance for the former India captain. These reports claimed the BCCI was looking to move on from Sharma as part of preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia firmly dismissed these claims on July 17, 2026, stating there had been no discussions regarding Sharma’s retirement. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord's on Sunday,
Saikia said. He emphasized that Sharma remains a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he remains in the board’s scheme of things.

Following the official clarification, Sharma delivered a notable performance during the third ODI at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Despite India falling 27 runs short of England’s target of 387, Sharma scored 138 runs off 110 balls. His innings included 17 fours and 5 sixes, making him the first Indian player to score an ODI century at the venue.
Sharma’s innings featured a 147-run partnership with Shubman Gill—who contributed 77 runs—followed by a century partnership with Virat Kohli. The match concluded with India finishing at 360/7, resulting in a 2-1 series victory for England.

The rumors regarding Sharma’s career trajectory were fueled by his modest performance in the first two matches of the England series, where he recorded scores of 11 and 26. These results prompted scrutiny from critics, though members of the team management defended the veteran opener.
