This specific hardware was responsible for launching two lunar landers on January 15, 2025, from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The two payloads involved in that mission were the Blue Ghost
lander from the U.S. company Firefly Aerospace and the Resilience
lander from the Japanese startup ispace, as reported by multiple outlets.
Calculations regarding the impact date have converged on August 5. The findings have been attributed to experts, including the U.S. astronomer Bill Gray and the U.S. space agency NASA. Despite the specific nature of the trajectory data, the company founded by Elon Musk, SpaceX, has not yet provided a comment regarding the trajectory or the eventual impact of the rocket hardware, according to statements cited by various news agencies.

This event is not the first time a piece of human-made debris has struck the Moon. Approximately four years ago, a similar incident occurred involving what scientists concluded was a piece of an old Chinese rocket. Analysis of imagery from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter at the time pointed toward the booster of the Chang’e 5-T1
