NASA Artemis III Mission Pivots to Orbital Test Ahead of 2028 Moon Landing

NASA has scheduled the Artemis III mission for 2027, shifting its focus toward a complex orbital demonstration that will serve as a critical dress rehearsal for returning astronauts to the lunar surface. According to NASA, this mission is designed to test rendezvous and docking operations with commercial human landing systems in low Earth orbit (LEO) before the agency attempts a crewed lunar landing in 2028.

A Complex Orbital “Dance”

The Artemis III mission will involve a crew of four launching aboard the Orion spacecraft atop a Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. Once in orbit, the mission will execute a series of maneuvers with two separate commercial landers: SpaceX’s Starship and Blue Origin’s Blue Moon.

According to Space, Artemis III is shaping up to be one of the most elaborate spaceflights in history. The mission requires a highly choreographed dance involving multiple launch pads at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The coordination of three distinct, powerful launch vehicles—the SLS, SpaceX’s Starship/Superheavy, and Blue Origin’s New Glenn—within a short timeframe creates a complex logistical challenge for ground and flight crews.

For this demonstration, both SpaceX and Blue Origin will provide test versions of their crewed landers. These “test articles” are essential for gathering in-flight data, allowing the companies to mature their designs before future lunar missions.

* Blue Origin: The Blue Moon lander will incorporate major avionics, flight software, and control systems. It will feature a crew cabin and an Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS). During the mission, two crew members will enter the Blue Moon lander to test its functionality. This setup will allow NASA to evaluate how the integrated stack of Orion and the Starship test lander interact. Notably, astronauts will not enter the Starship test vehicle during this mission.

According to Universe Today, Blue Origin’s lander will be the first of the three spacecraft to reach orbit, where it is capable of remaining for up to 30 days. This allows NASA to confirm the lander’s condition before the Orion crew launches to join it.

The four-person crew assigned to this mission includes: * Randy Bresnik: NASA commander and former F/A-18 test pilot. * Luca Parmitano: European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and pilot. * Andre Douglas: NASA mission specialist. * Frank Rubio: NASA mission specialist, who holds the record for the longest single-duration spaceflight by a U.S. astronaut.

As reported by Livescience, the mission is set to last almost two weeks. This duration provides the team with additional time to test key life-support systems and in-flight docking maneuvers.

Stakes for the Artemis Program

The successful execution of Artemis III is a prerequisite for the Artemis IV mission, which is targeted for 2028 and is intended to land Americans on the moon for the first time since 1972. Steve Creech, program manager for the Human Landing System Program at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, stated that the objectives for Artemis III are intended to build confidence in the spacecraft and launch vehicles prior to a crewed landing.

The rockets required for these launches have experienced recent setbacks, with both the Starship and New Glenn programs currently under scrutiny following flight anomalies.
