According to a report by Solar Power Guide, China’s Three Gorges Dam leads the global rankings with a 22,500-megawatt capacity, followed by major installations across South America and Asia that provide electricity to millions of homes.
Global Power Rankings: The Lead of Three Gorges Dam
The global energy infrastructure is currently defined by gargantuan projects, with hydroelectric dams occupying the top tiers of capacity. Leading the list is the Three Gorges Dam in China, which boasts an output of approximately 22,500 megawatts. Built across the Yangtze River, it remains the largest power station in the world, according to data from Solar Power Guide.
Following closely is the Itaipu Dam, a collaborative project shared by Brazil and Paraguay. With a capacity of roughly 14,000 megawatts, it stands as one of the most significant hydroelectric stations globally. China continues to hold a dominant position in the rankings, placing the Xiluodu Dam—located on the Jinsha River—third on the list with a capacity of 13,860 megawatts.
Hydroelectric Infrastructure in Brazil and Venezuela
South America remains a hub for massive hydroelectric power. In Brazil, the Belo Monte Dam, situated in the Amazon river basin, provides 11,233 megawatts of electricity. It represents one of the nation’s most significant infrastructure undertakings. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s Guri Dam continues to play a critical role in the country’s energy stability. With a 10,235-megawatt capacity, it is recognized as one of the oldest and largest power stations in operation.
Technological Advancements in China and South Korea
Beyond traditional dam structures, newer technology and alternative energy sources are scaling up to meet global demand. The Wudongde Dam in China, which features advanced engineering, contributes 10,200 megawatts to the grid. The shift toward renewable energy is further evidenced by the Jiuquan Wind Power Base, also in China. As the world’s largest wind power installation, it produces 7,965 megawatts of energy.
Nuclear energy also remains a powerhouse in the global generation mix.
