American Heart Association Links Five Cups of Coffee Daily to Lower Heart Risk

A new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA), published Monday in the journal Circulation, indicates that consuming up to five cups of coffee daily is safe for most adults. The report suggests that regular coffee intake may be linked to a lower risk of several cardiovascular conditions, including heart failure, stroke, and coronary heart disease, as well as type 2 diabetes.

According to the AHA, energy drinks can trigger sudden spikes in blood pressure and acute, potentially life-threatening irregular heart rhythms, even in healthy adults.

These products often contain significantly higher concentrations of caffeine—sometimes three to four times that of regular coffee—alongside other ingredients like taurine.

The Impact of Preparation and Genetics

The AHA emphasizes that the brewing method and additives significantly impact potential health benefits. The positive associations identified by the panel apply to paper-filtered or instant coffee. Conversely, unfiltered methods—such as French press, espresso, or Turkish coffee—retain a compound called cafestol, which can raise low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. Furthermore, the addition of cream, sugar, sweeteners, or flavored syrups may cancel out the potential health benefits of the beverage.

Individual tolerance to caffeine also varies based on genetics. Inherited variations in the CYP1A2 liver enzyme gene influence how quickly an individual metabolizes stimulants. While some people can comfortably process 400 milligrams of caffeine, others may experience sleep disruption, anxiety, or heart palpitations with much lower amounts.
