As of Tuesday, July 21, the United States has conducted airstrikes against Iran for ten consecutive nights. According to U.S. forces, the strikes are intended to hold the country accountable for what they describe as unjustified aggression
against mariners.
The current wave of attacks follows the recent deaths of three American soldiers in Jordan and Iraq. President Donald Trump has stated that the U.S. struck “very hard” at Iran “in honor of” the three fallen soldiers.

Iranian Retaliation Against Arifjan, Riffa, and Muharraq Bases
The conflict has expanded beyond initial targets, with Iran responding by attacking U.S.-allied interests in the region. The Iranian army reported firing rockets at U.S. radar, missile, and defense systems at the Arifjan base in Kuwait and the Riffa and Muharraq bases in Bahrain. In Kuwait, air raid sirens were activated, and the military confirmed that air defenses were deployed against Iranian drones and rockets. Furthermore, the Revolutionary Guard claimed that two oil tankers caught fire following explosions while attempting to pass through a southern route in the Strait of Hormuz.
Irans’s state-aligned media reported that explosions were heard in Chabahar and Konartak, as well as near Sirik, and that air defenses at the Bushehr nuclear power plant were activated. Iranian authorities also stated that at least one person was killed in the American air strikes conducted the night prior.

Esmaeil Baghaei, a spokesperson for the ministry, criticized the U.S. military actions, asserting that there is no “ambiguity” regarding the intent of the agreement recently reached between the two nations. Baghaei declared that Tehran views the ongoing American strikes as a fundamental treaty violation.
The text of the intent agreement is short and consists of 14 clauses. The wording is quite clear, and there is no excuse for America to break this treaty, Baghaei stated to the press.

Donald Trump Threatens Control of Kharg Island Infrastructure
Military and political attention has increasingly centered on Kharg Island, located approximately 30 kilometers off the coast of the Bushehr province. The island is essential to the Iranian economy, housing the country’s most important oil terminal and handling over 90 percent of its crude oil exports. President Trump has repeatedly issued threats to take control of this strategic hub. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, At some point not too long from now we will take Kharg Island. He further threatened to seize other energy infrastructure to gain control over Iran’s oil and gas market.
Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, a prominent Iranian negotiation leader, warned the U.S. against further escalation. Wrong strategies and impulsive decisions will change the whole situation for the worse, blow up energy infrastructure and markets and create an endless quagmire that you will be stuck in for years, Qalibaf wrote on X. You will see a different Iran.
Expert Analysis on Negotiating Under Fire
Kvindesland, a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Iran Studies at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, suggests that the strikes reflect Donald Trump’s frustration with stagnant negotiations. As Trump talks about this, he sees many of these attacks as part of the negotiations. In his eyes, negotiations are still ongoing, and these attacks are extra playing cards, extra pressure in an ongoing negotiation process, Kvindesland told NTB.
However, Kvindesland argues that this tactic may be counterproductive. Iran’s main priority now is to secure an agreement that protects them from future attacks. Now the U.S. confirms again that they are willing to attack while they are negotiating. It means that the value of an agreement that Iran can enter into with the U.S. becomes less and less, he explained. Kvindesland noted that the conflict has essentially settled into a gray zone between war and peace, exacerbated by the significant political distance between the two nations.
The situation remains volatile, with a high-ranking intelligence official in Tehran warning on July 16 that if the “enemy” continues to target infrastructure or perform further assassinations of officials, the whole region will pay the price.
