UK Bumblebee Populations Decline as Heatwaves Cause Overheating

UK bumblebee populations face steep declines as climate-driven heatwaves force the insects to struggle for survival. Data from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust reveals that record-breaking temperatures in 2022 caused significant population drops, as overheating muscles and dwindling food sources prevent these vital pollinators from foraging effectively during extreme weather events.

Bumblebees are a quintessential feature of the British summer, yet their physical design—originally an evolutionary advantage for cooler climates—is becoming a liability in a warming world. These insects possess dense, furry bodies and powerful flight muscles that help them retain heat. While efficient in temperate conditions, these features make it difficult for them to cool down when temperatures climb.

Population Impact of the 2022 Heatwaves

The danger is not merely theoretical. Analysis of data from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust’s long-running BeeWalk monitoring scheme highlights a sharp, measurable decline in populations following the extreme summer of 2022, when UK temperatures hit 40.3C. Dr. Richard Comont, the Trust’s science manager, explains that once air temperatures reach 28C to 32C, bumblebees struggle to fly without overheating. They actually cook themselves from the inside out, says Comont. Once their internal body temperature is much above 40C, they literally start dying, they start keeling over.

The impact on specific species was severe. Red-tailed, buff-tailed, and common carder bumblebees—three of the country’s most common species—peaked well below normal levels, down 20%, 25%, and 35% respectively. The consequences persisted into the following year, with BeeWalk data showing that overall queen numbers were below average in March, April, and May 2023.

The Foraging Energy Crisis

Heatwaves pose a two-fold threat: physical overheating and a lack of nutrition. Dr. Paul Williams, a bumblebee expert at the Natural History Museum, notes that foraging is an energy calculation. Bees need to “make a profit” from their nectar collection to justify the expenditure of flight. If flowers dry up due to drought, the energy cost of searching for food becomes too high. When bees cannot find sufficient nectar and pollen, larvae develop more slowly, colonies grow less strongly, and fewer new queens are produced for the following year.

Practical Conservation Efforts

While global climate change continues to increase the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, conservationists emphasize that individuals can help by creating flower-rich habitats. Dr. Sarah Beynon, an insect expert, transformed her west Wales farm from what she called a wildlife desert into a nature reserve over a decade by planting meadows, willows, hedgerows, and late-flowering crops.

Beynon stresses that large-scale land ownership is not required to assist. Your flowerpot is a service station, she explains. It's somewhere to rest, refuel and carry on. Even a single pot of native wildflowers on a windowsill can serve as a vital refuelling stop. Additionally, Dr. Comont suggests that adding shade and small ponds can provide necessary relief for bees during the hottest parts of the day.
