Japan Partners With NVIDIA to Advance 6G and AI RAN Technologies

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) signed a letter of intent with NVIDIA Corporation on July 16, 2026, to collaborate on 6G and AI radio access network (RAN) technologies. The agreement aims to build secure, interoperable digital infrastructure and strengthen Japan’s technological competitiveness in physical AI connectivity.

Strategic Collaboration on 6G and AI RAN

The partnership, formalized through a signed Letter of Intent (LOI), marks a significant step in Japan’s effort to lead in next-generation wireless communications. By focusing on 6G and AI RAN—technologies that the MIC views as essential for Japan’s industrial and societal digital transformation—the government intends to create a structured cooperation framework with NVIDIA.

The collaboration specifically targets the development of physical AI connectivity, a concept that seeks to bridge the gap between cloud-based AI and real-world network infrastructure. According to the ministry, these technologies are foundational for connecting everything to AI via high-speed, next-generation networks.

Leadership and Signatories

The agreement was signed by Takuo Imagawa, Vice-Minister for International Affairs at the MIC, and Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President for the Telecom Business Unit at NVIDIA Corporation. Their involvement underscores the high-level commitment from both the public and private sectors to align on strategic objectives within the 6G and AI RAN fields.

Global Integration and Future Infrastructure

This move is part of a broader shift in Japan’s international strategy. The MIC has been actively pursuing partnerships to secure its leadership in wireless tech, including its decision to join the AI-RAN Alliance in February 2026. By integrating with global partners, the ministry aims to foster a digital ecosystem that is secure, resilient, trusted, open and interoperable.
