Reading Festival Axes BBC Introducing Stage as Part of Major 2026 Overhaul

The End of the BBC Introducing Stage

For years, the BBC Introducing stage served as a vital launchpad for emerging talent at the festival. The removal is part of what organizers have described as the biggest staging and arena overhaul in the festival’s 37-year history. While the stage is being removed, Festival Republic has announced The Canopy, a stage dedicated to festival fans’ next favourite artists. Featuring a unique tri-span structure, The Canopy will play host to the likes of Violet Grohl, Villanelle, December 10, Camille Blackman, Kibo, Finessekid, Cruz Beckham, and The Breakers.

Artist Reaction to the Festival Overhaul

Tommy Longhurst, lead singer of the Reading band Only the Poets, described the move as “sad newsfor young musicians. Longhurst, whose band played the stage as recently as 2025, told BBC Radio Berkshire that the music industry is alreadyreally hard” for those who are just starting out, with grassroots venues struggling to stay open.

New Stages and Site Changes for 2026

Reading and Leeds Festival, presented by Pepsi MAX, has announced a major redesign of its stages and site for the 2026 edition, with six new and improved stages set to transform the festival experience at Little John’s Farm in Reading and Bramham Park in Leeds. The festival is set to take place over the bank holiday weekend of Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 August. With Glastonbury on a fallow year in 2026, Reading and Leeds is set to be Britain’s largest music festival this summer.

The new stage lineup includes:

• The Grid: The area formerly known as the main stage, hosting headliners including Charli XCX, Fontaines D.C., Dave, Raye, Florence + The Machine, and Chase & Status. It will also host Sombr, Skepta, Role Model, Declan McKenna, Jade, Maisie Peters, and Keo. Blossoms will perform on The Grid in Leeds only, and Loyle Carner will perform on The Grid in Reading only. Additionally, Kasabian will make history in Leeds as the first-ever Thursday night headliner of Leeds Festival.
• The Gallery: Presented by Budweiser, this is a brand new undercover immersive stage featuring LED screen lights and immersive production. Performers include Josh Baker, Geese, Kneecap, Skye Newman, Kettama, and Holly Humberstone. Gunna, Chris Stussy, and Viagra Boys will appear in Reading, while Jamie Webster, The K’s, and Rose Gray will perform in Leeds.
• The Warehouse: A brand-new purpose-built home for dance music with viewing platforms in front and behind the decks, plus huge screen production. It will feature sets from Skepta b2b Prospa, Hybrid Minds, Hedex, Silva Bumpa, and Rossi.
• The Ballroom: A dramatic, chandelier-lit space for genre-spanning performances and breakout acts, featuring YT, Florence Road, Niko B, Paris Paloma, Overpass, SPEED, Frost Children, Bleech 9:3, Westside Cowboy, and Chloe Qisha.

As the festival enters this new era, the impact of removing the dedicated BBC platform remains a point of discussion for those who view the stage as a primary gateway for the next generation of UK music headliners.
