Kuwait’s critical infrastructure, specifically its power generation and water distillation facilities, has been the target of a persistent series of attacks over four consecutive days, according to official reports from the Kuwaiti government. against the State of Kuwait. These attacks have triggered emergency responses across the country, necessitating the precautionary shutdown of power generation units to stabilize the national grid.
Infrastructure Damage and Emergency Response
The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has documented that several power and water distillation plants were targeted by hostile strikes beginning late last week. These facilities are essential to Kuwait’s daily operations, as the country relies on desalinated seawater for more than 90% of its drinking water, according to reports citing the Associated Press. The repeated targeting of these sites has placed significant strain on the nation’s utility infrastructure, particularly during the summer months when electricity and water consumption reach peak levels.
In response to the incidents, the Ministry activated emergency plans in coordination with the Kuwait Fire Force and security agencies. On July 19, 2026, the Ministry stated via its official account on the X platform that the impact on generation units necessitated immediate technical intervention. The volume of impact that affected the generation units required the activation of emergency plans and immediate dealing with the incident, with the aim of limiting its effects and maintaining the stability of the electrical system and the continuity of basic services, the Ministry stated.

One such incident resulted in injuries to a worker and firefighters, who were subsequently evacuated for medical treatment.

On Saturday, the General Staff of the Kuwaiti Army announced that defense systems were actively intercepting missiles and drones launched from Iran. The General Staff warned that the sounds of explosions heard by residents were the result of air defense systems engaging hostile targets. Residents were advised to adhere strictly to safety and security instructions issued by the relevant authorities.
The operational impact of these hostilities reached the civil aviation sector. Kuwait Airways announced on Saturday that it was forced to reschedule most of its flights due to the temporary closure of the Kuwait International Airport airspace. Furthermore, the oil sector, a pillar of the Kuwaiti economy, reported significant damage. The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation announced that a vital site in the oil sector had been struck on Saturday, resulting in grave material losses
and several injuries, forcing the evacuation of the site.
