Cockroach Janta Party Protest in Delhi Ends in Violence

On July 20, 2026, Delhi Police used tear gas and batons to disperse thousands of Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protesters marching toward India’s Parliament. The demonstrators demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and systemic examination reforms following widespread paper leaks, marking one of the capital’s most significant recent confrontations.

Escalation at Sansad Marg and Jantar Mantar

The protest, which brought together students, teachers, and professionals, began as a Sansad Chalo (March to Parliament) rally aimed at pressuring the government during the first day of the Monsoon Session.

By early afternoon, hundreds of protesters reached within a few hundred meters of the new Parliament building. Security forces, including Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force personnel, responded with lathi-charges and tear gas. timesofindia.indiatimes.com reported that chaotic scenes unfolded as officers used batons to clear the area, resulting in injuries to both police and demonstrators. At least 103 people were hospitalized, with 38 treated at Lady Hardinge Medical College and 65 at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for fractures, head injuries, and effects of tear gas.

Government Outreach and CJP Demands

Amid the unrest, a shift in government posture emerged when CJP representatives Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka met with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. This marked the first direct communication between the movement and the administration.

Despite the meeting, the situation remained tense. Mr. Das noted that while Nadda promised to discuss the demands with the government, no concrete resolution was reached. The ball is in their court, Das stated in an update shared by timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

The Origins and Scope of the Movement

The Cockroach Janta Party emerged in May after the Supreme Court chief justice used the term cockroaches in reference to unemployed youth during a court hearing. The movement gained national traction by reclaiming the insult as a badge of honor. The current protests are driven by widespread anger over irregularities in the NEET and CBSE examinations, which have fueled a sense of disillusionment among India’s youth.

Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, criticized the government’s response, stating that the administration met legitimate questions with force while those responsible for systemic leaks remain unpunished. When these children raised legitimate questions about education — they were met with lathis and detention in response… The criminals who leaked the papers roam free… Gandhi wrote on X, as reported by thehindu.com.
