Tragedy Near Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport
Two professional firefighters died on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, while battling a violent fire near the Bordeaux-Mérignac airport in Gironde. The incident occurred as the firefighters were operating a response vehicle that became trapped by flames during the initial phase of their intervention, according to Marc Vermeulen, director of the departmental fire and rescue service (SDIS 33).
The victims were professional firefighters stationed at the Saint-Médard-en-Jalles barracks. Their deaths were confirmed by the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, during a session of questions to the government at the National Assembly. The fire broke out in the early afternoon, with reports placing the start time between 14:10 and 14:30. The flames originated on a grassy and wooded area located outside the airport perimeter, near the long-term parking lot (P4), logistics warehouses, and automotive dealerships, including an Audi concession that was evacuated as a precaution.
Operational Impact and Investigation
The proximity of the blaze to the airport infrastructure caused significant operational disruptions. Several departures from the Billi terminal were delayed, and some passengers, such as those on a flight to Lanzarote, were confined to their aircraft during the emergency. Access roads to the airport were neutralized by law enforcement to facilitate the movement of emergency vehicles.

A judicial investigation has been opened by the Bordeaux public prosecutor’s office to determine the origins of the fire and the specific circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Renaud Gaudeul, the public prosecutor of Bordeaux, stated that 25 investigators were deployed to the scene to conduct initial assessments and determine if the fire was accidental or criminal in nature.
Regional Context: Vigilance Rouge
The fatal fire occurred on the same day the Gironde department was placed under vigilance rouge
(red alert) for forest fire risks. The prefecture cited extreme weather conditions, including strong winds, high temperatures, and low humidity, as key factors in the elevated risk.
In response to these conditions, the prefecture had implemented strict prohibitions across forest-dominated communes, including a ban on the use of thermal or electric motors capable of producing sparks between 14:00 and 22:00. Sophie Brocas, the prefect of Gironde, noted that approximately nine out of ten fire starts in the current context are of human origin, urging the public to exercise maximum vigilance to protect lives and property.
