After eleven days of hearings, the court delivered a verdict of life imprisonment for both parents, who were 24 years old at the time of the offense. Presiding Judge Johann Lohmann stated in his sentencing that the case left the court fassungslos zurück—stunned or speechless. The court found that the parents had willfully and indifferently accepted the death of their child, Ashley, through consistent neglect.

The defense had sought a conviction for negligent homicide, requesting prison terms of four and a half years for the mother and five years for the father, arguing that there was no collective intent to kill. The court rejected this, finding that the mother had become overwhelmed by the demands of motherhood shortly after the child’s birth in May 2025. The mother claimed that the parents had only noticed the baby’s weight loss approximately two weeks before her death, but the court found the neglect had been ongoing.

Failed Responsibilities and Medical Neglect

The judicial findings highlighted a pattern of systemic neglect. The mother had reportedly found breastfeeding lästig (burdensome) and reduced it, despite the infant’s inability to accept bottle feeding. Medical reports presented during the trial contradicted the mother’s claims that she had been feeding the child every 90 minutes.

The father was also held accountable for his failure to intervene, despite being aware of the feeding issues since August 2025. The father told the court, Ich hatte die ganze Zeit das Gefühl, dass ich den Kindern nicht gerecht werde (I had the feeling the whole time that I wasn’t doing justice to the children).

The Role of Child Protective Services

The trial scrutinized the oversight provided by local authorities.

In one instance, a staff member from the youth welfare office visited the home in June 2025 to check on the twins but did not observe the infant. While the prosecution had investigated potential misconduct by youth welfare staff, those proceedings were ultimately dropped, with no findings of relevant misconduct.

Legal Distinctions and Future Appeals

The court classified the death as murder in conjunction with the severe maltreatment of dependents. The prosecution had argued that the parents’ failure to seek medical help despite the visible emaciation of their child met the legal threshold for cruelty and intent by omission. While the defense is currently evaluating whether to file an appeal (revision), the life sentences remain in effect. As of July 21, 2026, the judgment is not yet legally final.
