The investigation into the death of Ann Widdecombe has revealed grim specifics about her final moments. Prosecutors told the court that a kitchen camera installed in the home captured the entire incident, recording the defendant’s movements and sounds from the victim. The court was told the defendant was seen parking on the drive and entering the property at approximately 12:01 p.m. on July 8.

The prosecution detailed that Kerry allegedly hid a hammer from view before striking Widdecombe 21 times. Prosecutor Kashir Malik stated that the defendant arrived at the Dartmoor home in a red Vauxhall Corsa, entered through an open front door, and spent only two minutes inside before fleeing with a stolen wallet. The victim’s body was not discovered until the following day, July 9, after she failed to attend a pre-arranged online interview shortly before 1 p.m. that was scheduled to air live on Channel 5’s Matt Allwright show. The production team attempted to contact Ms. Widdecombe through her personal assistant, resulting in a gardener being sent to check on her. Upon entering, the gardener found the front door held back with a doorstop and discovered Miss Widdecombe lying face down on the kitchen floor with a serious head injury.

Legal Status and Counter-Terrorism Investigation

Joshua Kerry, a resident of Byrley Road, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was arrested on suspicion of murder at 9 p.m. on July 11 at his home address, 265 miles away from the crime scene. While he has been charged with murder, he was also arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. He has not been charged with these additional offences, but they remain under investigation. Police searches of the defendant’s property resulted in a hammer and a pair of gloves being recovered from a bin. The legal proceedings moved to the Old Bailey following the initial hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where the defendant appeared in a grey prison-issue tracksuit. A provisional trial date has been set for June 8, 2027. Initially, Philip Spinney, senior coroner for the county of Devon, Plymouth and Torbay, opened an inquest into her death at 10 a.m. and declared that a postmortem examination had taken place, but at that stage, the precise medical cause of death had yet to be established. However, at a subsequent Westminster Magistrates’ Court hearing at 2 p.m. the same day, Prosecutor Kashir Malik stated: A provisional cause of death from the pathologist was given as a blunt force injury to the head.

Ann Widdecombe’s career in public life spanned decades. First elected as a Conservative MP in Kent in 1987, she served as a prisons minister in the 1990s and later became an MEP for the Brexit Party. At the time of her death, she was a spokeswoman on immigration and justice for Reform UK.
