A new economic study published this month by the National Bureau of Economic Research indicates that patients using GLP-1 medications—such as Ozempic and Wegovy—took 17% less long-term sick leave compared to non-users. Researchers found that these medications, which are prescribed to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes, are associated with a significant decrease in health-related absences exceeding 30 days.
The study, which utilized nationwide Danish health and employment records, was conducted by researchers from Duke University, the University of Chicago, the University of Copenhagen, and the ROCKWOOL Foundation. According to the findings, the reduction in long-term sickness absence reached 17.3% over a four-year period, with the impact becoming more pronounced as time progressed.
Understanding the Health and Economic Impact
The research suggests that the medications improve overall patient health by regulating appetite, blood sugar, and digestion. By reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes, the drugs help prevent the severe health complications that typically necessitate prolonged time away from the workplace.
Beyond the reduction in long-term absences, the study observed that patients receiving GLP-1 therapy experienced:
- Fewer emergency department visits.
- Lower use of cardiovascular medications.
- Reduced reliance on long-term sickness benefits.
These combined factors translated into estimated annual savings equivalent to 1.3% to 1.5% of an individual’s yearly income, or approximately $866 on average, according to Cbsnews.
Contextualizing Findings: Denmark vs. the U.S.
Researchers cautioned that the fiscal implications of these findings depend heavily on local labor policies. In Denmark, employers are responsible for paying full salaries for absences up to 30 days, while the government covers long-term sickness leave beyond that duration. Consequently, the primary fiscal benefits of reduced long-term leave in Denmark accrue to the state.
Jonathan Zhang, a professor at Duke University and a co-author of the study, noted that the situation in the United States differs significantly due to the lack of similarly generous, government-funded sick leave policies. In the U.S., employees who are ill may choose to continue working despite their health status, a phenomenon known as “presenteeism.”

He suggested that if GLP-1 medications help reduce presenteeism, companies could see gains in productivity, potentially allowing workers to perform at higher levels of consistency and earn more promotions.
Scope and Limitations
While the study highlights potential economic benefits, researchers emphasized that the findings should not be interpreted as evidence that GLP-1 drugs automatically increase overall labor-force participation or total earnings. The study found no significant evidence of such increases during the four-year follow-up period.

Furthermore, the data focused exclusively on patients prescribed GLP-1 medications for medical reasons, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, rather than individuals using the drugs for cosmetic weight loss. The study authors concluded that the findings suggest meaningful fiscal spillovers from GLP-1 treatment through reduced sickness absence, though they stressed the importance of considering the specific healthcare and employment frameworks of the countries in question.
