India Reaches Eighth Place at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games With Ten Medals

India climbed to eighth place on the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games medal table with 10 medals, driven by weightlifting success, a para athletics double podium, and a gold medal from Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu as the multi-sport event reached its midpoint on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

As competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games officially got underway, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to the entire Indian contingent, stating on social media that the skills and dedication of their athletes always inspire countless people across the country.

Mirabai Chanu and Weightlifting Lead India’s Medal Surge

Weightlifting has emerged as India’s most successful discipline of the Games, contributing six of the country’s first ten podium finishes. Mirabai Chanu stole the show by capturing India’s first gold medal of the competition in the women’s 48kg category. Competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games, Chanu bounced back from initial failed attempts to successfully lift 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, securing a winning total of 190kg.

The victory marks her third consecutive gold medal in the event following top podium finishes at Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022, adding to the silver she earned in Glasgow back in 2014. Joining her on the weightlifting podium through impressive performances were Rishikanta Singh in the men’s 60kg event with a silver, Raja Muthupandi in the men’s 65kg with silver, Gyaneshwari Yadav in the women’s 53kg with silver, Bindyarani Devi in the women’s 58kg with bronze, and Valluri Ajaya Babu, who secured a silver medal in the men’s 79kg category.

Historic Para Athletics Double Podium and Track and Field Milestones

Para athletes delivered a historic double podium for India in the women’s shot put F57 classification. Sharmila Dhankar scripted history as the country’s first-ever Commonwealth Games para athletics champion, claiming the gold medal with a season-best throw of 9.81 meters. Teammate Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla captured the bronze medal in the same event with a personal-best throw of 7.26 meters, marking the first time India has won two medals in a single para athletics event at the Games.
