France and Spain Fight Record Wildfires as New 40C Heatwave Forecast

The scale of the current devastation is staggering. In France, a monster blaze in the Gironde département has scorched 42,000 hectares—an area roughly seven times the size of Manhattan—forcing 220,000 people to flee.

The fire in south-west France is not a standard forest blaze. According to the National Firefighters Federation, the Gironde fire has generated a pyrocumulonimbus—a massive cloud created by intense heat capable of producing its own lightning, powerful winds, and secondary fires. Eric Brocardi, a spokesperson for the federation, described the struggle as a David-versus-Goliath scenario.

This atmospheric volatility has made the fire advance erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area, coming within 15km (9 miles) of the city’s periphery. Co-owner Maria Angeles Canete, 54, recounted fleeing by boat onto the reservoir as gas canisters exploded and trees lit up in flames. We lost everything, Canete said.
