Senate Qualifications Challenged Over Business Experience Claims

The dispute centers on public statements made by Yingcheep Atchanont, director of the internet-law civic group iLaw, who questioned the eligibility of Senator Somphan Palasak and Senator Daeng Kongma under Group 10 regulations. Group 10 covers business operators and other related professions outside of the small and medium-sized enterprise category. According to the challenge, the two senators allegedly lacked the required 10 years of specialized experience necessary to qualify for their seats in the national legislature.

In response, Somphan Palasak announced legal action against Yingcheep, accusing him of spreading accusations that caused public confusion, social hostility, and reputational damage. Somphan stated that the Election Commission already dismissed similar challenges nearly two years ago and warned against fighting legal matters by generating new disputes.

Election Commission Rulings Clear Amnat Charoen Lawmakers

Public records from the Election Commission office outline the specific findings that led regulators to dismiss the complaints against both senators. Election Commission Ruling No. 249/2567 addressed allegations against Daeng Kongma, who listed her background in the candidate profile form as working in pork retail since 1997. Although critics argued her market stall lacked formal commercial registration documents, investigators found that Daeng had operated a pork stall at the Wichitsin Private Market in Mueang Amnat Charoen district since 1940 (noted in source records as operating from 2540 BE, corresponding to 1997 CE) and served as a committee member for market development since 2004.

Furthermore, the investigation into Daeng’s application included signed endorsements and witness statements from the market owner and three fellow market vendors who verified her background (dailynews.co.th).
