Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the new men’s Test head coach for England, according to BBC Sport. The 53-year-old was unanimously agreed upon by the selection panel, beating several high-profile candidates for the position, as reported by Cricbuzz. Fleming takes over the role following the departure of Brendon McCullum, who remains in charge of England’s white-ball sides.

Fleming brings a wealth of coaching experience to the international stage, having spent 18 years with the Chennai Super Kings franchise. During his tenure, he led the team to a record five Indian Premier League titles and two Champions League T20 titles, alongside coaching affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA, coaching the Melbourne Stars, and guiding the Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred in 2023. As a player, Fleming was New Zealand’s longest-serving Test captain, leading the side in 80 Tests with a national record 28 victories. He made 111 Test appearances, scoring 7,172 runs at an average of 40.06 before retiring in 2009. His English county career included playing for Middlesex, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, whom he captained to their first County Championship title in 2005.
Joe Root Re-Appointed as Permanent Test Captain
Alongside Fleming’s appointment, Joe Root has been reappointed as England’s permanent Test captain. Root, England’s greatest-ever Test run-scorer, previously served as skipper from 2017 to 2022, leading the side in a record 65 matches with 27 victories, 27 losses, and 11 draws. His return follows the shock international retirement of Ben Stokes in June. Root briefly stepped in to lead England during the second Test against New Zealand at the Oval earlier this summer when Stokes was absent.
Rob Key, the managing director of England Men’s Cricket, noted that Root will now have the opportunity to lead free from the COVID-19 restrictions that affected the end of his initial stint as captain. Root stated that working alongside Fleming is a “huge motivator” and expressed enthusiasm for leading the next generation of players.
Transition Timeline and Upcoming Series
Fleming will not immediately take charge of the team. He is scheduled to spend time with his family in New Zealand before flying to the UK later this summer to prepare for the Test tour of South Africa in December. Consequently, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, which begins on 19 August at Headingley, where Root will officially begin his second tenure as captain.
Reflecting on his new role, Fleming stated according to AOL that he was incredibly excited to be joining England as Test Coach and called it one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. He also highlighted the potential within the squad, specifically noting plans to support Root and help develop players such as Harry Brook, emphasizing a focus on both immediate success and medium-to-long-term development.
