Reviewers note that the phone’s performance scores match competitors utilizing the same chipset, such as the OPPO Find X9 Pro and the vivo iQOO 15.

Redesigned Body and Controversial Glass Finish

The most immediately noticeable change to the Xperia 1 VIII is its exterior styling. Sony has replaced its traditional vertical camera module with a square-shaped camera island positioned in the upper-left corner of the rear panel, lending the device a fresh aesthetic.

However, the physical texture of the chassis has drawn mixed reactions. According to AndroidWorld, the glass back features a grainy, sandpaper-like finish that extends to the sides of the phone. While the material looks luxurious, testers described the tactile feel as polarizing, likening it to a nail file.

Despite the modernization of the rear panel and camera placement, Sony has retained several signature hardware characteristics. The Xperia 1 VIII includes a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm audio jack, and distinct top and bottom bezels on the display, which allow the 12-megapixel selfie camera to sit outside the screen without a punch-hole cutout.

Battery endurance proved robust during routine usage scenarios. In the PCMark for Android Work 3.0 battery life test—which cycles through web browsing, video editing, photo editing, document management, and data handling—the device operated for 15 hours and 36 minutes before dropping from 100% down to 20% charge.
