Asteroid Apophis, named for the Egyptian god of chaos, will pass closer to Earth on 13 April

On 13 April 2029, asteroid 99942 Apophis will make its closest known approach to Earth in recorded history, passing within approximately 32,000 kilometers (about 20,000 miles) of the planet’s surface, according to multiple sources. This distance is less than one-tenth of the average lunar distance and closer than many geostationary satellites, which orbit at about 35,786 kilometers above Earth. Despite its proximity, NASA and other space agencies have confirmed the asteroid poses no immediate risk of impact for at least the next century, marking a rare opportunity for scientific observation and public engagement.

Scientific Missions and Research Opportunities

The 2029 flyby will be a focal point for international space agencies and researchers. NASA has reoriented its OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft to study Apophis after its closest approach, while the European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing the Ramses mission to investigate the asteroid’s response to Earth’s gravitational forces. JAXA’s DESTINY+ spacecraft, originally intended for a different mission, will also conduct a flyby of Apophis weeks before the Earth encounter, traveling at a relative speed of 1.5 kilometers per second.

These missions aim to study how Earth’s gravity might stretch or alter Apophis’s rotation and surface, potentially triggering landslides or other geological activity. The data collected could enhance planetary defense strategies for future asteroid threats.

Historical Concerns and Current Safety Status

Discovered in 2004, Apophis initially raised alarms due to early calculations suggesting a 1-in-37 chance of impacting Earth in 2029. However, subsequent radar and optical observations have refined its orbital trajectory, eliminating any risk of collision for at least the next 100 years. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) confirmed this in 2023, citing improved orbital precision that reduced uncertainty to a handful of kilometers by 2029. The asteroid was also removed from the ESA’s risk list following similar analyses.

Apophis’s name, derived from the ancient Egyptian deity Apep (or Apophis), reflects its historical association with chaos and destruction. Despite its ominous moniker, the asteroid is now considered a once-per-millennium natural experiment, according to MIT planetary scientist Richard Binzel. Global Visibility and Public Engagement

The 2029 flyby is expected to be visible to the naked eye for a significant portion of the global population. The asteroid will be most visible in the Eastern Hemisphere, including Europe, Africa, Asia, and parts of eastern South America, with optimal viewing conditions in regions with dark skies.

Despite its classification, NASA’s latest assessments confirm no impact risk for the next century. The asteroid’s previous close approaches, including a 2023 flyby at 10.6 million miles, have provided critical data for refining its orbital model.
