State Representative Austin McCollum was taken into custody early Saturday morning following an alleged domestic incident that quickly upended the county’s upcoming November election. Booked into the Benton County Jail at 2:13 a.m. on August 1, 2026, McCollum faces charges of first-degree false imprisonment, aggravated assault on a family or household member, and third-degree domestic battery, according to jail records and Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Shannon Jenkins.
McCollum, 35, won the Republican primary in March to secure the nomination for Benton County judge. Incumbent County Judge Barry Moehring previously announced he would not seek a fourth term, leaving an open seat that has now been thrown into political turmoil.
Bipartisan Condemnation and Calls for Immediate Resignation
By Saturday evening, the arrest triggered an unprecedented wave of condemnation from the state’s highest-ranking elected officials, with nearly all major Republican leaders calling on McCollum to abandon his political career entirely. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders described the accusations as sickening while offering prayers for the representative’s family.
“The allegations against Representative McCollum are appalling, and I’m praying for his wife and children. I absolutely condemn violence of any form, and if these credible, sickening allegations are accurate, I call on him to immediately resign his office and drop out of the race for county judge.”

Lieutenant Governor Leslie Rutledge acted swiftly to sever ties with the candidate, announcing that she was withdrawing her endorsement of McCollum’s campaign effective immediately.
