Just days after celebrating their third league championship, AS Monaco found itself barred from the top two professional divisions by financial regulators, exposing a multi-million-euro debt crisis that threatens the club’s survival.

Financial Regulators Reject Monaco’s Pro League Entry Over Debt

The stunning reversal arrived when the Direction Nationale de Conseil et du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCCG) formally refused to register the reigning champions for the 2026–2027 campaign. The governing financial body cited the lack of sufficient guarantees regarding the economic viability of the club for the upcoming season and the status of the club’s takeover proceedings as the primary driver behind the exclusion.

Owned by Russian-Hungarian businessman Aleksej Fedorycsev, the club has survived the past six months solely thanks to financial lifeboats thrown by the Monegasque state and a loan from its Société nationale de financement (SNF). Court-appointed judicial administrators examining the accounts warned that the club faced imminent cessation of payments, carrying an estimated debt load of 25 million euros at the conclusion of the season.

Failed Takeover Bids and the Appeal Process at the FFBB

Monaco’s leadership scrambled to assemble a rescue package, with reports pointing toward a potential takeover bid spearheaded by former NBA star Jamal Mashburn. Yet, hesitation lingered among local decision-makers given Mashburn’s past withdrawal from a 2021 rescue effort at French club Pau-Lacq-Orthez. While the club obtained an extension until July 31 from the French Basketball Federation’s appeals chamber to finalize its ownership transition, the required financial guarantees failed to materialize in time.
