A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Egypt on Monday, August 3, 2026, rattling residents in Cairo and surrounding governorates. The tremor prompted immediate emergency measures from national health authorities and sparked a flurry of official updates from geophysicists monitoring the region’s seismic activity.
Instruments placed the epicenter roughly 38 kilometers from Suez, positioned at 30.30 degrees north latitude and 32.61 degrees east longitude with a focal depth of 10 kilometers.
A separate seismic event registered later that same day at 12:01:30 p.m. local time. The institute explained in an official statement that the stations of the national network for recording earthquakes registered the tremor at 12:01:30 p.m. local time, reaching a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale, occurring at 30.62 degrees north latitude and 32.57 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 26 kilometers.

Residents throughout Greater Cairo and neighboring governorates reported feeling the ground move, prompting widespread concern. Despite the alarm, the institute confirmed that no casualties or material losses had been reported across any affected area.
